Bookin It had 27 starts in her 4 year career, eventually ending up in Winnipeg. Through friends, we heard of this mare who needed a home, and the rest is history. Bookie is the sweetest barn-baby with the quirkiest personality. She has been with us for over 5 years, and is enjoying her retirement as a real horse with a real family.
Though OTTB's have the reputation of being high-strung and "crazy," Bookie is one of our calmest, smartest horses, with plenty of love to give.
About a year ago I came across a mare on Final Furlong named Petite Aimee, an x-racer, x-polo horse that had been lightly started on the Barrel pattern and was in need of someone that could understand her to take her to the next level. She was high strung, full of energy and beautiful! I bought her, hauled her home and started working with her. Last year I hauled her as my #1 horse, it was a lot of pressure for both of us but she handled it like the champion she is. ‘Fly,’ as we call her in the barn, won a number of awards in the MBRA and NBRA associations, the Ronald McDonald Charity Fundraiser and the Spring Fling.
I spent most of the winter jumping her over sub 3 foot courses. Fly loves to jump and although it has pushed me outside my comfort zone a little bit, I am beginning to enjoy it as well!
Last week we competed at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and Fly had two great runs. She ran in the 1st Division in the 1st Go and placed in the 2nd Division in the 2nd Go. She also won the High Point TB award from the TB Incentive Program, I have attached a few pictures.
I just wanted to thank both of you for the work that you are doing to re-home OTTB’s, they have so much potential in new careers. I currently own 2 other OTTB’s (La Ventana and Cool Angel), also found through your website.
Every time I go to the track his former trainers and grooms always ask how he's doing. He started his racing career down south, and finished at ASD at age 9! A star to handle, he was used in the groom school and was every grooms favorite. Sound and sane even after all those years of racing. Handsome and a super mover, we have had success in the dressage ring. Just an absolute joy to have.
Nodtotheheros, or Noddy as he known as at home, is a 1997 bay thoroughbred gelding, standing 16hh, who came off the racetrack when he was a five year old. He had spent the first few years of his life racing at Assiniboia Downs. He then came to our barn, SandyLane Stable, as a boarding horse. He has such a sweet personality and a beautiful way of traveling. WE would watch his owner at the time ride him, and wish that he was ours. A number of years later, through a series of events, he became ours. Let the training begin!! WE stared his schooling with basic dressage. As he progressed, we gradually added the ground work for jumping. He showed a natural ability over fences. We took him to his first schooling show where he placed well in both the flat and over fence classes up to 3’. His training is continuing as he is schooling 3’3”. In the four years that we have owned him he has come a long way. He has attended many schooling shows, the MLHA All Breed Show as well as the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. He as attained many wins and top placing’s in Road Hack, Show Hack, Dressage Hack, Hunter and Jumper. Noddy is extremely well mannered in hand as he will ground tie for grooming and tacking up as well as free longing on voice command. His sweet temperament and personality shows as he is also used for lessons, both flat and over fences, for riders as young as eight years. He knows when he has an inexperienced rider as he will go much slower and with more caution as to an experienced rider. Noddy is a great addition to our barn and he will be here for many years to come.
We received this email from Michelle and her family who took home Devil Down.
Hello, you had asked me to send you pictures of Devil Down , whos barn name is now Spartan, at his new home. We absolutly love him! He already has a part-boarder that adores him and we love taking him for nice trail
rides out in the farmers fields (he will even go on his own and go on a nice slow lope) and he loves to be groomed and given attention. Never in a bad mood and always willing to try whatever you want. He is a fantastic horse and i plan to purchase another ex race horse in the near future. We absolutly adore him and he is a great addition to our horse family! I recomend for people to give an ex-race horse a chance.
Celtic Star in her new home! Congrats to Raelene and Ryan - this mare has lucked out.
This is her first ride at her new home, a mere 2 weeks after her last race. These are some of the things Raelene has to say about her:
Ryan and I couldn't be happier with our new mare.. She is seriously a puppy
dog!..couldn't be any more friendly, gentle, or willing. Walked and trotted over small fences, tarps, tires.. You name it! And hasn't spooked at anything.
